BIG DAY for Edwin
Posted by
Mindy
Last day of school...he picked out his own clothes - and was so excited that I let him wear a superhero tank top to school! He was also very excited that Dave was home from work today and got to take him to school on his last day!
Following class, he had his last day of soccer...and we all went to watch!
He got a medal and celebrated a great year with Kona Ice.
This year has been amazing in terms of growth for Edwin. He is really growing up...and is going to make a great helper when Louie joins us! He is so excited for his summer space camp, his birthday party, continuing breakdance lessons...and of course for school again next year! We couldn't be more proud of our little man!

So, I've told Dave that if I EVER tell him that I want to do work in EVERY ROOM of our house in one weekend ever again...tell me NO...pretty sure I overextended myself - even if I weren't pregnant, it would've been too much! With that said, I didn't get everything done and will be continuing projects up until the birthday party to get as much done before family/friends come in person to visit...and definitely before Louie decides to join the family...
So far this is what I've accomplished and have pics ready to share - much more to come:
Living room fireplace insert painted - NO MORE BRASS!!! Dark picture image replaced with new purple flower from my most recent photography class.

Edwin's room successfully upgraded to SUPERHERO status including new wall art courtesy of AJ and some of my own craftiness, new superhero table, new Batman blanket, and lots of furniture rearranging! Still waiting on his blue curtain side panels to come...
Lyla has transitioned nicely to her BIG GIRL ROOM - she has successfully slept in her big girl bed since returning from Grandma's house both overnight and for naptime! I'm so proud of her...can't believe she's old enough for all of this yet! Her room is a vision come true. AJ and I have been working on gathering materials for her room for so long...and it was wonderful to watch this one come to reality. Don't get me wrong, Edwin's was fun - but expected...Lyla's is PERFECTION! Even Dave said it looks like it is out of a magazine. The pics just don't do it justice...but trust me, it is something so special!!!! There are so many things in Lyla's new room including handmade quilt from AJ, misc chickens from Great Grandma Betty's collection, and soon hot pink curtains will complete the look!
Projects still in process include:
French doors leading into office -
Kitchen renovation - BEFORE:
There are so many more projects that I started or completed this weekend with the help of numerous family/friends including: hanging bikes in garage so we can park cars easier, starting our half bath renovation, painting our exterior house numbers, continuing work on Louie's nursery, continuing work on our ex-dining-room turned activity room and more...but these pics give you some idea of my weekend...needless to say I'm wiped out! But, I feel like I've accomplished so much in a VERY SHORT amount of time. Thank God for friends/family - I know I am blessed with the best...
MORE TO COME!!!!

A day of soccer
Posted by
Dave
8:24 a.m. - Dad and kids wake up together in Grandma's guest bed (Lyla joined after pooping herself awake in the crib around 6) realizing they'd have to rush through the morning routine to make game #1 on time.
9:30 a.m. - First soccer of the game of the day, Meredith's. No score is kept, but we're fairly certain her side finishes with a few more goals.
11:30 a.m. - Tacos.
1:00 p.m. - Second soccer game of the day, this time it's Madeline's turn. Again, no score is kept. Didn't keep specific count, so we're not quite sure if her side was outscored by single or double digits.
2:45 p.m. - Third soccer game of the day, this time the televised variety, the Champions League final while Grandma prepares dinner. No scoring until Bayern in the 83rd minute. Drogba equalizes for Chelsea in the 88th minute. No scoring in extra time (including a penalty kick save by Chelsea). The match goes to PKs, Drogba hammers home the final one, giving Chelsea a 4-3 advantage and the win.
6:30 p.m. - Not a game, just some running around in Grandma's backyard. This time Edwin, Lyla and Sarah join Madeline and Meredith in the soccer action. However, Lyla seems more interesting in sitting on the ball and waiting for it to hatch than kicking it. And Edwin's preferred method of obtaining the ball is pity-whining as opposed to, you know, running after it and getting it himself.
9:07 p.m. - Lyla to bed, Edwin and Dad shortly thereafter.

UPDATES from Loveland

First, I'm glad Dave is back to writing on the blog - we've all missed him, haven't we?
Now for my updates...
Our kitchen looks like a scene from ET...but on the inside...there is NO TURNING BACK...all cabinets are primed and tomorrow the actual paint goes on. The fumes are worse than I expected...so I'm going to do my best to stay away from the area. Dave, I apologize in advance for our increased electricity bill this month - but windows have to be opened and AC has to be on...

Official song of the weekend
Posted by
Dave
I decided to commemorate the weekend by selecting an official song of the "me and the kids go to Grandma's" portion of "do a project in nearly every room of the house before baby #3 comes and Mindy gets too pregnant" weekend.
The methodology for this selection was to listen exclusively to pop stations on the 250-mile drive to my mom's house, track how many times each song was played, and whichever was played most frequently would be this weekend's official song.
I've made this trip so many times over the last 15 years, picking up stations from Cincinnati then Dayton then Columbus then Cleveland finally Akron/Canton and Youngstown, that I know that a song probably needs to hit the 5-times played mark to be the winner. So we only tracked songs that are relatively new, figuring even if an older song happened to get played twice, it still wouldn't have a legit chance to be #1.
Now, for the newer songs that we did track, we heard 20 or so only once. Some weren't surprises, as they were over a year old, so hearing them only once was to be expected. Similarly, a few were songs that we heard for the first time, so this weekend was a little too early for them to be champions.
There were some surprises though. Feel So Close by Calvin Harris, I mean, is just me or is that song is everywhere right now? The kids really like jamming to that one. I figured that was good for at least a 3-spot. Also, What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction--only hearing that once was a shocker.
The other major upset was only one Katy Perry song making an appearance. Yeah, I realize Part Of Me isn't brand new, but still. I thought there was some sort of legistlative mandate of one Katy Perry song per 50-miles of driving. Maybe they changed the enforcement and I'll be receiving a ticket in the mail. Plus, I really enjoy Edwin saying, "Wait, why does she want to throw her phone in the trash? How is she s'possed to call anyone?"
OK, on with the results...
Honorable Mentions (songs with 2 plays each)
We Are Young by Fun
This one is definitely no surprise. It was probably just a quirk in timing that we somehow didn't hear it more often. This is one of Lyla's faves. She tries to sing along "ta-niiii-iiiii-iiiiii-iiii-ahhh-ahhh". Edwin prefers songs he can breakdance to, so he's more lukewarm to this one.
Glad You Came by The Wanted
I had never really listened to this song before, so this caught me off guard. Upon seeing the video, this appears to be another boy band, so maybe One Direction is part of some boy band revival.
Hearing a song 3 times in a few hours, you start to pay attention to the lyrics. The most intiguing lyric in this track goes something like "take you by the hand / hand you another drink / drink it if you can". Why would this drink recipient potentially be unable to drink this drink? Is it alcoholic and they are under 21? Or are they over 21 but haven't yet acquired the taste for the potentcy of this particular drink like, say, Scotch? Or maybe it's not an alcohol thing. Maybe it's a gluten or peanut allergy situation. This lyric really has me curious.
Wild Ones by Flo Rida featuring Sia
This song was playing when I first turned the key in the van's ignition. It ended up being the only song that ever held a lead besides our eventual winner.
Silver Medalists (4 plays each)
Starships by Nicki Minaj
One of Edwin's faves. When this comes on his arms and legs move seemingly uncontrollably. Eventually he becomes frustrated that he's strapped into a carseat, preventing legitimate breakdancing.
Payphone by Maroon 5 (and sometimes featuring Wiz Khalifa)
I have mixed emotions about the non-rap version we were introduced to on this trip. It's much better without the rap because it feels less forced and just flows better. On the other hand, when I hear Wiz Khalifa, I am reminded of Pittsburgh pro sports teams, which is always nice.
I love the irony of the radio edit of this song. The f-word in its gerund form--a word with which the kids are not familiar--is replaced with "stupid", which is verboten in the Ross house.
Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen
I was personally rooting for this one because the lyrics are so entertaining to over-analyze (and over-analyzing pop song lyrics is one of my favorite pastimes...ask Mindy about me desperately tryting to goad her into discussions about Hazard by Richard Marx). Even the soft serve place in Landen by our house has had some fun with this song posting a sign on their window reading:
The Winner
It was barely even close. With seven total plays...
Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye featuring Kimbra
Things got exciting for a moment during the finals (that 45-minute stretch on I-76 when we can get Cleveland, Akron, and Youngstown pop stations, so there's ample opportunity for lead changes) when this song was only ahead by one. But then near Alliance, it came on again, taking a 2-play lead with barely a half hour to go, and it was all but over. Any comeback at this point would be as unlikely as Man City's unbelievable 2 goals in stoppage time last weekend. And for good measure, it added its 7th play before we even exited the highway.
I guess I'm fine with the song winning. It's one of the few non-dance songs that Edwin loves. The other day while playing with his Ben 10 action figures, I hear him singing to himself, "you didn't have to cut me out, [some humming], you treat me like a stranger and it feels so rough, [more humming], now you're just somebody that I used to know".
At one point just north of Columbus, the song wasn't even playing, but I'd sing "somebody!", and Edwin would sing back "I used to know!" We did that like 12 times in a row, and he stops and says, "let's do this the rest of the way to Grandma's".
In honor of the champion, here are some homages.

Honorable Mentions (songs with 2 plays each)
- Rumor Has It by Adele - I had never listened to this song in its entirety before this trip. And now I can go back to not listening to it. A few weeks back I said to Mindy (who likes Adele, I think) that I'm over this whole Adele thing. To which she accuratley pointed out that I was never quite under it to start with.
- Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera - It's a little older so even 2 plays is respectable, which is good because that was 2 more than any of us needed.
- A Thousand Years by Christina Perri - This song was greeted by napping and indifference (the kids napped, I indiffered).
- Without You by David Guetta featuring Usher - A Ross kids favorite. Each play was greeting with vigourous leg kicks and fist pumps. A little older, so it never really had a shot at winning, but everyone was happy it made an apperance on the list.
- Self Back Home by Gym Class Heroes featuring Neon Hitch - Lyla seems to enjoy this tune more than Edwin, she really gets into it. The Cincinnati stations play the less edited version so Mindy never leaves it on for the kids. Whatever stations I had on yesterday played the kid-friendly "Self" version, so that was nice.
- Stronger by Kelly Clarkson - I got nothing to add.

We just me you. And this is crazy. But here's our Twitter handle. So follow maybe. So many words to pour over. Why is it hard to look right at the boy she is singing about? And the other boys only try to chase her, not actually chase her? But the best line is "before you came into my life, I missed you so bad", which harkens back to a concept first introduced by Savage Garden in 1997 with "I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You".

Upcoming weekend
Posted by
Dave
Recently, Mindy and I have learned to love our big, themed get-stuff-done weekends.
There was "prep our Newport house to put on the market weekend" on March 26-27, 2011, when we had plenty of family and friends over to do last minute fix-up projects. (Spoiler alert for those that haven't seen the movie yet: we sold the house a week later and lived happily ever after in the suburbs.)
And no one can forget "move Edwin to his big boy pirate room weekend" on May 21-23, 2010, when Mindy and I took Edwin out for tacos then shoved him into a toddler bed, closed the door, glued ourselves to the video monitor and prayed he wouldn't fall out (he didn't).
Less successfully there was "Dave attempts to give up caffeine weekend" back on President's Day 2010. That particular weekend started with me having an excruciating headache and making Mindy and Edwin attend our friends' kid's birthday party without me on Saturday. Followed by me wanting to crawl out of my skin like David Crosby kicking heroin cold turkey in prison on Sunday. Then ending by me downing a pot and half of coffee in 35-minutes first thing Monday morning.
Well, this weekend is one to top them all. It's "do a project in nearly every room of the house before baby #3 comes and Mindy gets too pregnant weekend": May 17-20. A non-comprehensive list for the weekend is:

- Lyla's big girl room set-up (new paint, new theme is vintage chickens, do I have that right, Mindy?)
- Edwin's room officially becomes super hero room (paint + redesign)
- Mindy, what am I forgetting?
Mindy's got the cavalry coming--pro amateur--to assist.
Oh, I almost forgot the most fun part: the kids and I will travel to Canfield to avoid this mess all together. If the spirit moves me, I will post updates throughout the weekend here.

Happy Mothers' Day! We took Mary Lou out to Antone's for their buffet. I wanted to sucker punch a rude, rushing me lady that was standing behind the girls and me, but I behaved. :) Other than that, the food was delicious !!
My Cousin Liz got married yesterday. The girls got to experience the traditional wedding and reception. Meredith was really impressing people with her dancing skills!! It was a gorgeous day for a wedding. This is the dress that I wore to the ceremony ($14.99 Gabe's).
This is the dress that I wore to the reception. $14.99 TJMaxx (used a gift card , so it was FREE!!). I had to promise to post my wedding dresses so my co-workers could see them . This dress got a lot of compliments. Too bad I can't repeat it at my cousin's Michael's wedding in August (the bride's brother). I will not be able to top it, but I will try.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Mindy
To all of our readers who are mothers...this is the song that Edwin sang today (with his class) as part of his Mother's Day Tea program. I thought you all might enjoy it! Unfortunately, since I had Lyla...I didn't have an extra hand to film it...but believe me it was awesome...there wasn't a dry eye in the house!
Wherever you go, whatever you do
Through all the changes you go through,
I'll be there right next to you.
I love you.
When you're too small to reach the sink.
So all you do is sit and think
About how clean you would have been
know that I will love you then.
When you can button up your shirt
and brush off your own dust and dirt
When you can spell and write your name
I will love you just the same.
When you try to cut your hair
And leave the clippings everywhere
And throw your hands in the air
I'll hold you in this rocking chair
When you crawl into bed
And on a pillow lay your head
When you're drifting off to sleep
All my love is yours to keep
Wherever you go, whatever you do
Through all the changes you go through,
I'll be there right next to you.
I love you.

His teachers asked each kid in his class to complete this sentence - my favorite thing to do with my mom is...
Edwin's answer?
Cuddle and read stories... yep, I'm blessed! Thank you God for a PERFECT little man...
and Happy Mother's Day to our moms and every mom out there!!!! We have an important job that will never end...some days will be hard, but if we can remember what a gift we've been given...I believe it is all worth it! Don't you?

WARNING: I went to a high-school friend's baby shower today and a college-friend's engagement party yesterday and I'm just over 25-weeks pregnant...so I'm a little emotional.
I have been thinking about how awesome it was to announce to our family and friends that Dave and I were getting married...I was so excited! and the good news...I am even more excited after all of these years together to tell people about my amazing husband. He continues to amaze me. He works tirelessly to provide for our family and make it possible for us to live a wonderful life. I am beyond thankful that he is allowing me to live my dream.
I also remember what it was like to celebrate my first pregnancy. My baby showers were an experience I will never forget and I am forever thankful to our family and friends who continue to celebrate our growing family with #3 coming.
I believe God continues to bless our family...on a daily basis I'm reminded of how awesome our life is. Even on days when the kids are crazy or I'm exhausted or we have difficulties...it is PERFECTION - no more and no less.
