What a Great Holiday!

We left Newport around 10:00am on Thanksgiving Day. We stopped by Lebanon to drop off Sedona at Grandpa's house and feed Edwin before making the 4-hr drive to Pittsburgh for our Thankgiving feast. This was Edwin's first trip to Pittsburgh and he loved spending time with Great Grandma!

We then went to Grandma's house in Canfield for the remainder of the holiday weekend. Edwin was great all weekend...with one exception. Grandma arranged to get photos of Edwin, Madeline, and Meredith and of course, he was cranky and cried during the photo shoot...

Other than that, he was a great traveler. He has now been to six states and is looking forward to his next big trip - TUCSON, AZ to meet more great grandparents...we fly out on Friday, Dec 12th for a long weekend...should be interesting!!!

Here are some of my favorite pics from the weekend:

Happy Thanksgiving!

I know it is a few days early, but I couldn't resist. Edwin got his first Thanksgiving card in the mail from Grandma Ross and we wanted to take the opportunity to say Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers.
I am thankful for so many things...way too many to write about. But there are several worth mentioning:

MY HUSBAND - I know that I'm the luckiest woman alive. Dave is AWESOME! He takes such good care of me and Edwin...THANK YOU!
MY SON - Edwin has helped me learn patience, living in organized chaos, and most importantly unconditional love - THANK YOU!
MY FAMILY - All families have their issues and mine is no exception. At the end of the day I wouldn't trade any of them...THANK YOU!
MY FRIENDS - Everybody needs a strong support system of friends who will be there for you no matter what...over the years, I've learned who these people are...you know who you are...THANK YOU!

Cincinnati, a college football town

Walking along 4th Street just after 5pm this evening, and what do I see as I pass downtown Cincinnati institution Koch Sporting Goods? The giant-sized mannequin by the entrance usually dressed head-to-toe in authentic Bengals gear (or Reds gear in the summer) is in its normal location on the sidewalk by the entrance.

But the orange and black uni is no where to be found.  In its place: a full Bearcat uniform.  Thanks, Brian Kelly.  Please don't go to Tennessee.

Final 27-10

Wow, the Steelers cover.  They're now 8-3, while the Bengals remain anagramic for at least another week, now at 1-9-1.  I still don't know how good these Steelers are...they've done nothing to convince me they're any better than a 1st round playoff exit.

Regardless of how many readers there were tonight, blogging during a Steeler game had a calming and therapeutic effect on my football viewing experience.

Thank you and good night.

INT for Polamalu

Under 2 minutes to go...this game is done.

Collinsworth on QBs

He listed Palmer up there w/ Brady & Manning.  He obviously didn't read my post a few months back.

Mewelde

Watching him this 4th quarter, I'm gonna have to take back my missing The Bus comment.

27-10

Moore Mewelde
TD Ben

Huge 3rd Down Conversion

"The magic of Ben Roethlisberger"

NFL Network Camera Work

It stinks.

FG?

Under 7 minutes to play, down 2 scores...kick a FG & you're still down 2 scores...hmmm. 20-10 Steelers.

Bengals on the move

4 down territory?

Bengals TEs

Can't they utilize Reggie Kelly more?

Edwin

Edwin, punting exercise starts again tomorrow!

4th Quarter Running

Anyone else miss the Bus at these points in games?

Dear Punt Return Blockers

Let's steer clear of the ball, boys.

End of 3rd Quarter

This is a time check post for you, Melinda.

Great Drive

64 yards
Mewelde, Mewelde, Mewelde
Awesome Ben pump fake
TD Russell
20-7 late in the 3rd

Another Bengal 3 & out

Steelers may have got away with one on TJ though...

6 point lead

So true from the play-by-play guy...1 busted play away from a Bengals lead.  This punting situation ain't helping.

Whoah

Huge offensive pass interference call on Washington.  Steelers to punt.

Another Steelers Stop

I love it one that quick snap and kneel down blows up the Bengals face.  That annoying move is the football equivalent of A-Rod yelling "I got it" as he runs from 2nd to 3rd.

Reed good again

13-7 middle of the 3rd

Ward drops a ball on 3rd down

Worried about revenge?

Santonio

Gets laid out but holds on.  At least his 3rd catch of the drive.  I'm sure the Bengals D liked that hit though...

Ben

Finally, Ben scrambles for a 1st down!

Penalty

Can we get a replay of it please?

3 & out

Not the way the Bengals wanted to start the half.

Another Drop?

Collinsworth: "Goodness!"

1st Half Notes

Neither team can run...the Bengals actually have 2 more rushing yards.

Both QBs look pretty good, each w/ a TD.  Ben's had more time & got the yards to show for it. Fitzpatrick has been blitzed and handled it well, only 1 sack though for a minimal loss.

Momentum is w/ the Steelers D.  Bengals should try to re-establish that quick passing game to counteract the pressure.

With the weather & the #1 D, the Steelers may only need a few more FGs to put a lock on this game.  I don't see a cover in their future though (unless they get that Polamalu TD from last week).

10-7 at the half

Wasn't it 10-7 at the half of the last game these 2 teams played?

What's happening?

1. Limas Sweed is an idiot

2. The Bengals go for it there?

Punt rule check

Isn't there something about being blocked into it?

Re: Snow

Wait, I'm gonna be there in 7 days...it better warm up!

FG

Steelers can't covert on 3rd & 3.  Opt for the 37-yard attempt.  Reed knocks it through.  10-7 Steelers.

Snow

Glad I'm not in Pittsburgh.

Huh?

Just realized (thanks Collinsworth) that was Perry on 3rd down. Strange call.

Big Stop

3rd & 1 from mid-field, and the Bengals can't pick it up on the ground. That's a good sign for the Steelers D going forward.

7-7, 10:16 to go 1st half

Roethlisberger 3-yard TD pass to Miller.  I'm surprised the Steelers were able to run for that 1st down on 4th and 1 from the 4.  Steelers were lucky to stop the Bengals on that last drive.  Let's see how they recover.  We got a game on our hands.

Arians

Collinsworth wisely calls out Pittsbugh's poor offensive play calling...this has been happening all year.

Turn around?

Dropped pass on 3rd down.  Bad punt.  1st & 10 Pittsburgh.

1st Quarter Summary

Bengals look good. Steelers don't.  The end.

Punting

There's gotta be someone in the stands that can punt better than this guy.  They just flashed his avg after the before his 3rd punt, 30.5. What that last 1 go for, 30?

Progress?

OK, good field position + a pass on 1st down

Bengals take 7-0 lead

Nice job by the Bengals, hitting the Steelers for 3 to 7 yards at a time, moving the chains...

Bengals get a 1st down

Maybe Pittsburgh should try this throw on 1st down thing...

Holding on Punts

Even though it helped the Steelers, I hate holding calls on punts when it doesn't affect the play.  The punt went out of bounds...why would a holding call need to be enforced?

Oh well, 1st & 10 Cincy near mid-field.

Bengals 3 & out

Still scoreless.

0-0

Fast Willie looks tentative.  Ben nearly throws a pick. Washington drops a pass.  Punt.

National Anthem

Guy from 'N Sync, what, Jeremy Jordan not available?

Bob Papa?

Who's this guy?

Ready

Dave & Edwin are ready for the game.  Mindy may not like this outfit, but remember this?

(By the way...there will be no division in the family in a couple of nights when the University of Cincinnati hosts the University of Pittsburgh with an Orange Bowl bid on the line...sorry, Mom & Dad, go Bearcats!)

Likely out tonight

Pittsburgh:

Smith, T, back

Townsend, CB, hamstring

McFadden, CB, forearm

Cincinnati:

Henderson, DE, neck

Jones, T, back

Kooistra, G, knee

Ndukwe, S foot

Odom, DE, shoulder

Whitworth, G, ankle

Chatman, WR, neck

Hodge, LB, elbow

Palmer, QB, elbow

Ocho Cinco, WR, ego

Simpson, WR, ankle

Live Blogging: Steelers vs. Bengals

Trying something new tonight, so bear with me...

OK, AFC North fans, big showdown at Heinz Field tonight as the 7-3 Steelers host the 1-8-1 (that’s not a typo) Bengals.  For those of you that remember my post before their last meeting, simply add another win to the Steelers’ total, and the numbers look even worse for the Men in Stripes.

The so-called experts seem to think this could be a trap game for Pittsburgh.  I don’t see it that way at all.  If I’m the Steelers, I’m thinking I got 3 critical games left, the 3 remaining division games.  Win those, and you got a home game in the playoffs, possibly even a 1st round bye. There’s no excuse to look past the Bengals…especially since they’ll have revenge on their minds.

The key to this game in my mind comes down to the Steelers O-line vs. the Bengals front 7.  If the Steelers set up the ground game early and protect Big Ben, it’ll be a long night for Cincy. However, if the Steelers are often forced into obvious passing situations and have trouble with the pass rush, the Bengals have a chance.

Changing Paths

Well, I'm sure most of our readers know that I was recently laid off. It was a serious blow to my self-esteem...although it was expected. The economy has hit construction businesses hard and it looks like it might be a while before the industry recovers.

It is hard to leave a job that you enjoy...I have been there a little over 2-years and I can't help but think about all of the things that have happened in my life in that short time. Most noteworthy - becoming a mother. I'm so thankful that I was surrounded by encouraging and supportive co-workers throughout my pregnancy and these first few months of parenthood. I received some valuable advice and made some life-long friends.

Dave has been so supportive during this transition - did you have any doubts? We have built our relationship on support and communication and he knows just what to say when I question myself and my abilities. Sometimes I wonder how I got so lucky that Dave lived across the hall from me in the dorms!!!!

Now for the next challenge...bring it on!

Ding Ding Ding Ding

If we do end up bailing out the auto industry, can we make sure to fire the guy at Ford that decided to have the seat belt warning ding as soon as you start the car?  There's a special place in Hell* for that guy.

Look, I barely tolerate the whole seat belt warning dings at all.  Every time one goes off I'm reminded of that MADtv Verb Alert commercial spoof.  But I concede that fine, maybe it'll remind a few people to buckle up and save a life or 2.

But really, at least give me a couple minute leeway.  You are based in Detroit, right?  You never considered that on a cold Midwest(-near) morning in November that I may want to get in and get the heater cranked up before I concern myself with buckling in for safety (on a commute in which I won't even top 30 mph)?  You couldn't at least set the initial trigger for when I shift the car out of park?

*Note: The Ross Experience does not actually wish eternal damnation on any Ford employee or anyone else we can think of right now for that matter.  It is merely a figure of speech.

Life Without Cable

OK, so we purged our living room of a TV and have adjusted nicely over the last few months.  We now only have 2 TVs in the house: a 25'' in the guest room/office & a 13'' by the treadmill in the basement. The obvious next step? No more cable.

(Yeah, the whole digital conversion is a few months away, but worry not...we just requested 2 converter box coupons which should be mailed shortly.)

So, can we live without?
- ESPN & all that goes with it (we'll have to go out to watch the Steelers on MNF, hopefully with Kornheiser muted)
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (the best show on TV, but I think we can watch it online)
- MTV reality shows (Paris Hilton's My New BFF is just getting good)
- Cable news (we'll have to get our news online without all the yelling...we might miss the yelling)
- Comedy Central stand-up when we're bored on a Friday night
- The inevitable return of Flavor Flav
- Law & Order reruns
- The joy I get from programming out CMT, then later the frustration when I stumble upon Mindy watching the search for a Cowboy cheerleader or dancing bartender
- the great design ideas we get from HGTV (that we'll never put to use)
- Reds games (radio now, I guess)

The next cable bill is due on the 12th...let's see if we're brave enough to pull the trigger before then!

Garbage Day

Trying to get some consensus on garbage day ethics...

OK, let's say trash day is Monday. That means the garbage pick-up occurs sometime between 6 and 8 on Monday morning. Since there's a chance of the pick-up occurring before you wake up, obviously, it must be acceptable to take your trash to the curb sometime Sunday evening. Correspondingly, since the pick-up may occur after you leave for work, it must also be acceptable to bring the cans in from the curb after you get home in the evening.

That leads to my question...well, 2 questions, actually:

1. How early, on the evening before garbage day, is it acceptable to take your cans to the curb?
and
2.How late, on the evening of garbage day, is it acceptable to bring your empty cans in from the curb?

Edwin - 5 months old today!

So, today Edwin turned 5 months old...crazy! It's been a while since I gave you developmental updates...so here goes:

Edwin can roll over - from belly to back and back to belly. He rolls everywhere...can't leave him alone for a second anymore!

Edwin talks all of the time...I keep hoping for a 'mama' but nothing yet!

Edwin loves his toes! Today I even caught him putting them in his mouth.

Edwin voted in our presidential election! It's hard to see his sticker - but he's wearing it...

Edwin drinks 5 oz/bottle (approx 6/day).
Edwin is generally happy - smiling and laughing a lot!
Edwin sleeps from around 9:30pm to 6:30am...
Edwin reaches for toys and loves rattles/chew toys!

The Last Nice Day

Thursday. 2:46pm. Sitting in the office. Weather.com says it'll still be around 70 degrees at 6; tomorrow colder and rainy; the weekend will be worse. Based on my run after work yesterday, we won't have much daylight past 6-6:15. Email Mindy, "let's get outta here on time tonight and take a family walk."

4:59 becomes 5:00. I make a beeline to the car, Mindy to Childtime. I meet her and Edwin outside on Walnut just north of 3rd around twenty minutes later. We pull up to the house before 5:30. I run into the house and change out of my suit into something better for walking. I put Sedona on her leash, and I'm out the door.

Perfect: we're starting our walk and it's not even 5:40 yet. We get about 25 minutes of daylight, and finish up the last 5 minutes or so surrounding by the dusky glow. Nothing special, just 30 minutes for mom, dad, baby and dog to say hi to the neighbor kids, check out which for sale signs have gone up or come down, and forget about the stresses of the workday.

For those of you in the Midwest and Midwest-near, hopefully you were able to enjoy this last nice day as much as the Rosses of Kentucky did.

Update to Mindy's Journey to Pre-Pregnancy Glory

So, I haven't posted text in a really long time...SORRY! I figure everyone is more interested in pics of Edwin...not text from me!

But this is too good not to share.......

On Saturday - I was able to squeeze (and I mean squeeze) into my pre-pregnancy jeans - button and zip...unbelievable! I have been working so hard and still have 24 lbs to go to get to my pre-pregnancy weight - but it was a great feeling...well, maybe not...it actually hurt, but you know what I mean!

My goal is to get to my pre-pregnancy weight by my 30th birthday (Feb 5)...so if you see me during the upcoming holiday - help me stay honest...you know how easy it is to cheat! But I REALLY WANT to make this goal..

Special thanks to Dave - my constant fan and supporter for helping me thus far. He always has a kind word about my awkward body...how does any husband look at his wife the same again after witnessing the birth of a child? I guess they don't look at you the same - and I wouldn't want them to - it is different and in my opinion, BETTER!

Also, special thanks to Treva and Tamara...I don't know what I'd do without the support of true friends like you. Our daily check-ins and continuous meetings have helped me learn a lot about myself during this journey. Thanks for being there every step of the way.

Finally, special thanks to my sister, Jamie (co-worker), Missy, Jen, Cassie, Tracy N, Shannon, Melinda and all of the people that I don't have time to specifically name for their constant postive feedback and encouragement...especially on the days where all I want is 10 candy bars...I am blessed with a strong network of support...thankful to God for that!

Week in Review

Not having posted anything substantial in a while, I decided to address my writer's block by commenting on some recent news items that piqued my interest. Links to referenced articles are provided via the bold subject headings. I doubt this will become a regular feature, but I'll use it from time-to-time (like now) when I can barely muster any original thoughts...

The Economist Endorses Barack Obama for President

Yeah, I know, it's a British publication, so this endorsement is akin to Obama taking credit for opposing the Iraq War, but it's a magazine I respect nonetheless. Its opinion is always noteworthy because this isn't the New York Times we're dealing with, over the past 4 elections it has endorsed Clinton, Dole, Bush, Kerry. So here it goes:

The Economist does not have a vote, but if it did, it would cast it for Mr Obama. We do so wholeheartedly.

Really? "Wholeheartedly"? Later on they continue:

There is no getting around the fact that Mr Obama’s résumé is thin for the world’s biggest job.

...Our main doubts about Mr Obama have to do with the damage a muddle-headed Democratic Congress might try to do to the economy. Despite the protectionist rhetoric that still sometimes seeps into his speeches, Mr Obama would not sponsor a China-bashing bill. But what happens if one appears out of Congress? Worryingly, he has a poor record of defying his party’s baronies, especially the unions. His advisers insist that Mr Obama is too clever to usher in a new age of over-regulation, that he will stop such nonsense getting out of Congress, that he is a political chameleon who would move to the centre in Washington. But the risk remains that on economic matters the centre that Mr Obama moves to would be that of his party, not that of the country as a whole.

...So Mr Obama in that respect is a gamble.

The endorsement leaves the impression that its authors admire McCain and his record but not his campaign tactics, at the same time, they support what Obama's presidency would represent going forward for this country but aren't sold on his experience or his ability to reign in the forgone conclusion that is the Pelosi/Reid-dominated congress.

One could read this article with the few sentences that specifically reference their choice of Obama extracted and infer a McCain endorsement.

55 of 57 Slate Staffers Will Cast Their Votes for Obama

You need not wait with bated breath for Slate writers' opinions in the manner you would for The Economist, but I was surprised with this. I would've hoped the margin to be closer a 2-to-1 for Obama, not 27.5-to-1:

In capturing 55 of our 57 votes, with 1 to McCain and 1 to Libertarian Bob Barr, Obama won an even bigger Slate majority than Al Gore in 2000 (29 of 37 votes) or John Kerry in 2004 (46 of 52 votes).
I will give Slate editor, David Plotz, credit for doing his best to differentiate the concept of reporters having personal opinions vs. media bias, but it's a stretch. Regardless, I will continue to visit the site daily, if not for its unique perspectives on politics, culture and media, then for the fact that my company doesn't block it so I can read it while I have lunch at my desk.

Cincinnati's Potential Impact on Tuesday's Election Gets Coverage in a Major Newsweekly

Time takes 1200 words to say something I'll put in 12: Obama may do better in Cincinnati than Democrats did in prior elections. Well, here are some of their words:

Hamilton County, which includes and surrounds Cincinnati, was never in anyone's battle plan. Over the past 100 years, its voters have backed the Democratic presidential candidate only four times...This year, however, Hamilton is up for grabs.
Still, it was interesting to see my neck of the woods get a shout out in the national media. Although the state I call home is meaningless in presidential elections, I lived in the city of Cincinnati for 7 years and can currently see it from my house (that's not a Palin joke...I can see Mt. Adams from my house...well, from the street in front of my house).

Anyway, I give them a B- for capturing the essence of the city in this article, and an A for their ability to stretch one small concept into a 1200-word write-up, which I guess, is what writing news really amounts to anymore.

Seriously, maybe I've been permanently damaged by the corporate world, but I can't help thinking that most objective news articles (not opinion columns intended for persuasion) should be a couple lead-in sentences, followed by a bullet point list, with maybe a chart or graph thrown in. I swear half of the news articles I read are bullet point lists converted to paragraph form.

Krugman on an Economic Paradox

Paul Krugman (who, remember was simply an economist at one point) writes about the difficult situation caused by consumers reactions to bad economic times:

Sooner or later, then, consumers were going to have to pull in their belts. But the timing of the new sobriety is deeply unfortunate...The point is that if consumers cut their spending, and nothing else takes the place of that spending, the economy will slide into a recession, reducing everyone’s income.
An interesting conundrum, I admit. But what's his solution?

This time the stimulus should take the form of actual government spending.
Wow, Paul Krugman comes out for more government spending. What shocker will this editorial page level on the unwitting public next...Maureen Dowd with disparaging words for Sarah Palin?

UC Football on the Rise

The Equirer ran this Paul Daugherty column the morning before UC took down #24 ranked South Flordia at Nippert Stadium Thursday night:

Giddiness routed practicality when the Big East asked UC to become a member. It was like walking into a Mercedes showroom with a dollar in your wallet. Buy the sedan now, figure out how to pay for it later. Smell that new league smell. Cincinnati couldn't say no.
His big point is now that the Bearcats play in a conference that delivers an annual invitation to the national college football party, they have to figure out how to take advantage. Step 1 was hiring Brian Kelly:

Kelly was the perfect hire for UC football. Which means he'll be perfectly ready to move on, when the opportunity arises. If the Bearcats do get to the Orange Bowl, they'll need T. Boone Pickens to keep Kelly in red and black.

Kelly has said he wants to stay here and build the program, but he's smart enough to know leverage when he sees it, and ambitious enough to use it at every opportunity.

Kelly also knows how tenuous college football success is in a place like Cincinnati, which isn't exactly Columbus or Tuscaloosa.

Which brings us back to money. Lots of it.

I couldn't agree more. I'm even thinking of getting season tickets for '09: you combine a neighborhood I love in Clifton, beer sales at a college stadium, and $90 per season ticket, and you really can't go wrong. However, any Ross family ticket purchases will be contingent on Coach Kelly being on the sidelines.
